DO YOU ONLY PERFORM HAIR TRANSPLANTATION ON PATIENTS?
Absolutely not! Each patient is presented with a customized treatment plan that is specific to their hair characteristics. Dr. Wesley specializes exclusively in hair restoration, and therefore offers a wide array of treatments from which patients may benefit. In addition to conventional medical therapies, our patients have shown profound benefit from our innovative topical blends for hair growth. Rather than undergoing a surgery, some patients may be more likely to have an aesthetic improvement from a non-invasive procedure such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosome therapy. In instances when a patient will truly benefit from the increase in hair follicles to a desired area of their scalp, eyebrow, or face, surgical hair restoration using the most advanced technique may be the best option.
WHEN IS THE APPROPRIATE TIME TO HAVE HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY (HRS)?
Perhaps the greatest benefit of recent improvements in micro-grafting technique is the increased survival of even the finest transplanted hair follicles. As a result, patients no longer have to wait until their hair loss has persisted to an advanced degree causing considerable emotional distress. Currently, coupling microscopically-dissected grafts with meticulous surgical technique, we treat women and men (ages ranging from 18 to 88) in relatively early or later stages of pattern hair loss and achieve consistently positive results.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR HRS?
Both women and men suffering from hair loss should undergo an in-depth consultation and physical evaluation of their hair characteristics with a qualified physician. While the aforementioned improvements in micro-grafting technique have increased the diversity of patients who are appropriate candidates for surgery, there are instances for which HRS should not be the primary treatment. For example, medical therapy may be prudent if hair loss is caused by an underlying metabolic condition, a dietary deficiency, or an active dermatologic condition. Furthermore, a consultation may also help determine if the alopecia is temporary, simply requiring patience.
WILL IT LOOK NATURAL?
Yes. Dr. Wesley exclusively utilizes micro-grafting surgical technique and has considerable experience designing hair patterns that will continue to look natural in both women and men for decades after the surgery. Despite patients’ common inquiry regarding a friend or relative who may have gone to another practice long ago and now has “doll’s-head plugs”, natural appearance is not an issue in our practice and, as a result, Dr. Wesley has performed numerous revision surgeries of patients who have previously had undesirable hair treatments elsewhere.
HOW DO YOU MINIMIZE SCARRING IN THE DONOR AREA?
Virtually-undetectable scars are a priority in our practice. To this end, Dr. Wesley utilizes as much donor hair as is possible while still enabling a tension-free closure for FUT or the most imperceptible punctuate scars for FUE. Depending on the patient’s hair characteristics, this may allow for over 5000 transplanted hairs. By minimizing trauma along the donor region, administering medications to reduce inflammation, and demonstrating techniques to reduce swelling, the scar is able to optimally heal.
